Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Traditionally analysed as a compound of ὗς (hûs, swine) and πλήσσω (plḗssō, to struck, smite). In view of the variants with pre-nasalization, however, a Pre-Greek origin seems the most likely option.
