From Middle Chinese compound term 煙幕/烟幕 (ʔen mak, literally “smoke + curtain, screen”). Compare modern Mandarin yānmù, Cantonese jin1 mok6.

Noun[edit]
Usage notes[edit]
“To lay or place a smokescreen” is expressed in Japanese using the verb 張る (haru, “to stretch taut”), probably in reference to the curtain meaning expressed by the 幕 (maku) character.

Also used in a figurative sense.
- 好きな人について煙幕を張る
- suki na hito ni tsuite enmaku o haru
- put up a smokescreen about the person [he / she] likes
