Compare Portuguese Cochinchina (“placeholder for a remote, distant, or boring place”). Might harken back to the French conquest of Vietnam (1858–1885) that the Spanish Empire in nearby Spanish Philippines aided in or the Cambodian–Spanish War (1593–1597).
