Etymology

[edit]

Nominalization of gerade (straight, adjective).

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /ɡəˈʁaːdə/, /ˈɡʁaːdə/
  • Audio (Austria):(file)
  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: Ge‧ra‧de
  • Rhymes: -aːdə
  • Homophone: Grade (disyllabic)

Noun

[edit]

Gerade f (adjectival, definite nominative die Gerade, genitive Gerader, definite genitive der Geraden, plural Gerade, definite plural die Geraden) or Gerade f (genitive Gerade, plural Geraden)

  1. (geometry) line (infinite one-dimensional figure)
  2. (motor racing) straightaway

Usage notes

[edit]
  • The original adjectival declension is maintained chiefly in the singular: auf der Geraden. Here the form auf der Gerade would be somewhat informal. In the plural, however, nominal declension is by far predominant: zwei Geraden much rather than zwei Gerade.
