Homo + Latin Heidelbergēnsis, after the German city Heidelberg near which a mandibule of that species was discovered.

- A taxonomic species within the family Homo – Heidelberg man, thought to be ancestral to Homo neanderthalensis, the Denisovans, and Homo sapiens, and descended from early Homo erectus.
