From Proto-Iranian *tigráh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *tigrás, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)tig-ró-s, from *(s)teyg- (to be sharp) +‎ *-rós. Cognate with Avestan 𐬙𐬌𐬖𐬭𐬀 (tiγra, sharp), Old Persian 𐎫𐎥𐎼 (t-g-r /⁠tigraʰ⁠/).
