Alternative reconstructions[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From *tiŋ (reason, mind) +‎ *-la (denominal suffix). *tiŋ might be a loanword from Middle Chinese (theng, to listen) yet its back vowel & variant initial *d- make such a derivation difficult (Clauson, 1972:522). Also compared to Proto-Tungusic *ǯiŋ-, Proto-Mongolic *ciŋla- (to listen).

Usage notes[edit]

Oghuz descendants have the front vowel variant.

Verb[edit]

*tïŋla-

  1. (transitive) to listen
  2. (transitive) to hear
    Synonym: *ẹĺit-
  3. (transitive) to consider, mediate

Descendants[edit]

  • Oghur:
    • Chuvash: тӑнла (tănla)
  • Common Turkic:
