Why in etymology is written about Baltic "baltas"?
- It is to help explain why some people in that region (Baltic) are called "white" (White Russian, Balto-Slavic, etc.). The Slavic stem bela- (бела-) is cognate with with name Baltic, which comes from Lithuanian baltas (white). Cognate means that (бела-) and baltas are descended from a common ancestor. —Stephen 20:23, 24 April 2007 (UTC)
- It isn't universally accepted that Baltic derives from Lithuanian baltas or its cognates. (See Baltic#Etymology.) Does it still make sense to include it? I think there should at least be a "possibly" in there. 70.172.194.25 16:11, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
Emphasis on 'rus'[edit]
Around just after 1:50 [1], US Senator Rick Scott says 'Belarus' several times, seemingly emphasizing the 'rus' in 'Belarus' rather than the 'bela', as we hear in the US English audio file on this page （or something like that- maybe the vowel is different or something?). This is consistent with my own pronunciation. The pronunciation is markedly different from Maria Bartiromo's pronunciation at just after 2:30, which is more consistent with the audio file. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 16:07, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
