From Arabic اَلْمَدَائِن (al-madāʔin, literally “The Cities”) (plural of مَدِينَة (madīna)), calque of the Aramaic name.

- An historical Sassanian Persian metropolis on the Tigris between the ancient royal centers of Ctesiphon and Seleucia-on-Tigris.
