Apheresis of /h/ from variant hanghang. Exact etymology is unknown but possibilities are:
- From Central Proto-Philippine *haŋhaŋ
- Reduplication of halang (“spiciness; pungence”) with elision of /l/.
Compare Pangasinan hanghang, Cebuano hang/halang, and Hiligaynon kahang.
