Inherited from Old French baignier, from Vulgar Latin *baneare, Late Latin balneāre, from Latin balneum, and probably later influenced by the related French bain. Compare Occitan banhar, Catalan banyar, Italian bagnare, Spanish bañar, Portuguese banhar.
