Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Early Modern Spanish barajar (“to shuffle”), with metathesis and a loss of final ⟨r⟩. Possibly also from Early Modern Spanish baraja (“deck of cards”). Doublet of baraha, a later borrowing from Spanish baraja.
