bokë

Albanian[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From the same root of bukël, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰoHu (“to grow, swell”). Compare Old High German buhil (“hill”). See also bukur. Alternatively from Serbo-Croatian bok (“side, flank”), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *bokъ (“side”). However, Svane casts doubt over the Slavic source, owing to its divergent meaning (the Proto-Slavic term denotes parts of the physique rather than terrain) as well as the final -ë in Albanian, suggesting an inherited source. It is attested among Arbëresh Albanians.[1][2]
