From Old Swedish boghlina, equivalent to bog (“bow”) + lina (“line”). Cognate of English bowline, German Bulin, Dutch boelijn, French bouline, Spanish bolina, Italian bolina, Russian бу́линь (búlinʹ), Ukrainian булінь (bulinʹ). Exact origin somewhat murky.
