From late Middle High German besunder with adverbial genitive -s (compare sunders), from be- (older bī-) + sunder, from Old High German suntar, from Proto-Germanic *sunder, *sundraz, from Proto-Indo-European *sn̥Htros, from *senH- (“apart, without, for oneself”).
