From Sanskrit बुध्यते (budhyate), from the root बुध् (budh) from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewdʰ-. Cognate with Russian буди́ть (budítʹ, to awaken), Gothic 𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌱𐌹𐌿𐌳𐌰𐌽 (anabiudan), English bid, German bieten (to bid, to offer).
