From Proto-West Germanic *kraftugōn, *kraftīgōn, equivalent to cræftiġ +‎ -ian. Cognate with Old High German *kreftigōn (found in gikreftigōn (to strengthen), unkreftigōn (to weaken)) and Old High German kreftīgen (to make whole, heal).
