Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *kerḱ- (to become thin, to wane), related to Sanskrit कृश (kṛśa, thin, lean), Lithuanian karštu (to age), Avestan *𐬐𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬯𐬀 (*kərəsa, meager, lean).
