From Middle High German todern (“to mumble, stutter”), ultimately from an onomatopoetic root. Compare countless variations of this root: German totteln, dottern, dattern (“to stutter”), German tatteln (“to chatter”), Dutch tatelen, tateren (“to talk, chatter”), Saterland Frisian tätelje (“to talk nonsense, babble”), German Low German tatern (“to chatter”), Low German tateln, täteln (“to cackle, gabble”), English tattle.
