From French éréthisme, from Ancient Greek ἐρεθισμός (erethismós), from ἐρεθίζειν (erethízein, to irritate).

  1. (pathology) Abnormal excitement of a bodily organ or tissue.
  2. Any unusual or morbid overexcitement.
