English[edit]
Etymology[edit]
The name comes from the fact that the symbol is the width of a single digit in fonts where this width is constant.
Noun[edit]
figure dash (plural figure dashes)
- The punctuation mark '‒' (used when a dash must be used in numbers).
Usage notes[edit]
If a dash is used to express a range (such as "the numbers from 1 to 10") an en dash is used instead of a figure dash ("the numbers 1–100")
