From ġe- + *hæp, the second element from Proto-West Germanic *hap(p), from Proto-Germanic *happaz, *hampaz (“fitting; convenient”), from the noun *happą, *hampą (“convenience”), cognate with Old Danish happ (“fortunate”). More at hap.
