Etymology[edit]
From happo (“acid”); coined by Finnish folk poetry researcher, translator and journalist Julius Krohn in 1862. Declension as an e-stem rather than an i-stem noun is modeled after typpi (“nitrogen”), also introduced by Krohn as an element name.
