Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Polynesian *kupu by metathesis (cognates include Hawaiian ʻupu, Tahitian upu and Samoan 'upu),[1] from Proto-Oceanic *puku, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *bukuh (compare with Malay buku). Sense of "word" comes from metaphorical comparison of segments of written speech with culms of bamboo.[2]
