From earlier mesmo, from Old Spanish mesmo, from Vulgar Latin *metipsimus (compare French même, Italian medesimo, Portuguese mesmo), from Latin -met, an emphatic suffix, + ipse (“himself”) + -issimus (a superlative suffix).
