Etymology

[edit]

Possibly inherited from Proto-Slavic *nagorda or possibly a reduction of nadgroda (compare Kashubian nôdgrodanadgroda and Silesian nadgroda).[1] By surface analysis, deverbal from nagrodzić,[2][3] where nagrodzić probably originally meant "to set up a fence" with a shift to "to set up a knocked down fence" to "to pay compensation".[4] First attested in 1558.[5]
