Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *odottadak, from Proto-Uralic *woča-. Cognates include Finnish odottaa, Livonian vȯ’dlõ, Votic ootta, Ingrian ootella, Veps vottatada, Livvi vuottua, Ludian vuotada, Pite Sami ådsotet, Erzya учомс (učoms), Moksha учемс (učems) and Eastern Mari вучаш (vučaš). Possibly a derivation of oda, in which case the meaning has changed from to protect, to guard > to wait.
