Etymology[edit]

Disputed. Different interpretations have been proposed:

  1. A possible reflection of the sky and thunder god (from Proto-Indo-European *per-en-, an extension of *per(H)- (“to strike”), confer Proto-Indo-European *PeruHnos and *Perkʷunos), attached to *di, the sky-god (*Dyḗws);[3][4]
  2. Derived from perëndoj (“to set (of the sun)”), which might be borrowed from Latin parentare (“to bring a sacrifice (to the dead); to satisfy”).[5][6][7]
  3. Latin imperantem (“ruling”); compare Albanian dielli perëndon (“the sun sets”), perhaps ultimately a calque of Ancient Greek ὁ ήλιος βασιλεύει (ho ḗlios basileúei, “the sun sets”, literally “the sun reigns”).[8]
