Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic повѣсть (pověstĭ, “tale, narration, legend”), from Proto-Slavic *pověstь, from *po- + *věstь (“message”). Compare Serbo-Croatian povest (“history”) and Russian повесть (povestʹ, “narrative, story”), Czech pověst (“narrative story”).
