From Middle Irish ráma, rám, from Old Irish rámae, from Proto-Celtic *rāmiyos (oar), (compare Welsh rhaw, Cornish rêv, Middle Breton reuf (shovel)), from Proto-Indo-European *h₁reh₁- (to row).
