Etymology[edit]
Older skyt, from Middle Low German (ge)schutte, from Proto-Germanic *gaskutją, cognate with German Geschütz (“gun”), Dutch geschut (“artillery”). A collective from the noun *skutiz (“shot”), which is a verbal noun from *skeutaną. The modern Danish form is influenced by the Standard German cognate.
