From Proto-Iranian *cwaytáh, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćwaytás, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱweytos. Cognate to Avestan 𐬯𐬞𐬀𐬉𐬙𐬀 (spaēta), Sanskrit श्वेत (śvetá).
