    • c. 500 BCE, Majjhimanikaya Sutta 22 (Alagaddūpamasutta):
      ayaṁ kho mahā udakaṇṇavo, orimaṁ tīraṁ sāsaṅkaṁ sappaṭibhayaṁ, pārimaṁ tīraṁ khemaṁ appaṭibhayaṁ; natthi ca nāvā santāraṇī uttarasetu vā apārā pāraṁ gamanāya.
      Right, there is this large flood of water, a dubious and perilous near shore, and a safe far shore free of peril; and there is neither a ferry boat nor a bridge to go from the near shore to the far shore.
