Middle High German vür, from a merger of Old High German furi (“for”), from Proto-West Germanic *furi, and fora (“before”), from Proto-West Germanic *forē.
The Central Franconian prepositions für and vür are essentially one word; the spelling distinction mirrors German für and vor.
