Etymology[edit]

15th century, iterative extension of obsolete räuchen, from Middle High German röuchen, byform of rouchen, whence modern German rauchen (to smoke), which see for more. Both from Proto-Germanic *raukijaną. By surface analysis, Rauch +‎ -ern. Compare Luxembourgish reecheren, Hunsrik reichre.
