Etymology

[edit]

Derived from Old East Slavic вьрвь (vĭrvĭ), from Proto-Slavic *vьrvь (deverbal of *verti), from Proto-Indo-European *wer- (to tie, string; rope) which is ultimately cognate with *wer- (to turn, bend) whence the two meanings of the verb. Compare Russian верёвка (verjóvka), whence Ukrainian вірьо́вка (virʹóvka).
